There was a fire in the kitchen tonight. I was sort of the catalyst, though the fire marshall said the cause was a cutting board behind the toaster oven. This was apparently my family's storing place for it, gah. It melted down and caught stuff on fire when it oozed around.

I managed to beat it out with a big cloth before anything major happened, but still somewhere around 1k-2k damage most likely, thankfully my parents have insurance. Mom was surprised I kept my cool. The flames were about five feet high, I just waded in and started whacking things. I have slight burns and I'm covered in soot and smell like I've lived in a smoking bar for about a month.

Gonna get a shower and lay down. Oog.

I'll have picture of the damage in a few days.

You did a good thing there. 1-2K in damage could have been a total loss given more time. A good scrubbing should get rid of the smell, hopefully. Yeah, I want to see a picture of that. :)

It seems this last couple weeks have not been kind to friends and family of mine . . .

Keeping your cool with what you've described is also no small feat. Don't think little of it!

*snug* Here's hoping all turns out okat. The smell should get out after a couple good baths. As for the kitchen, insurance might cover it, and I certainly hope they do.

Well done, girl! And that's coming from a fire-fighter!

For future reference, fire extinguishers work better than a cloth. If you don't have one, make sure your parents get a few and install them around the house and garage.

And always remember, there is no such thing as too much fire-extinguisher!

I smack you! People get killed trying to fight fires that way.

I'm buying you a proper extinguisher.
