Feb. 18th, 2010 @ 08:29 pm Just a not-actually general statement
Current Mood: ranty
If you're going to sit around, shit all over and endlessly harp and bitch about one particular site, talking about how you could do X, Y and Z better and how A, B and C are crap. I have a groundbreaking, mindfuckingly astounding suggestion for you.

Why don't you shut your fucking piehole and actually try. If your punk ass is so gobsmackingly smart and brilliant, why don't just fucking just do it? Put up, or shut-up.

Note: I'm not saying there isn't reason to criticize or comment negatively about something. It's just when your entire point is that 'I could do it better'. Then for christ's sake, GO DO IT, instead of constantly TALKING about it.

I wouldn't characterize Furries that way. Furries generally draw, make, write things, or support those who do. Generally.

SoFurry.com is the website that replaced Yiffstar, and with Furnation is one of the most complained-about websites in the fandom.

As someone who's in the process of doing just that, I totally agree with this.

The limits of "just do it"

(Permanent Link)
The only problem I see in this sentiment is the fact that, occasionally, one can have the awareness of how to do it better, but not the skill, resources, or support. Consider the individual who actually designed the iPod interface ahead of Apple, but who didn't have the money to finance construction, the electronic knowledge to prototype it himself, or the contacts to bypass those first two restrictions.

There is something to be said about armchair quarterbacking and the ease of telling other people how to do their jobs as distinct from actually doing it, but it's a legitimate statement to say, "I know of a better way to do this, but I lack the means to make it happen by myself."

Consider, say, SoFurry, FA, or C&Q, and their collective lack of utility for furry writers. I know what I would put into a writing site. I think I largely know what the furry writing community needs in terms of resources, tools, mutual reinforcement, advertising, and quality control. I know what features I would like to have on such a site as would satisfy those needs, and I know what I would do to maintain and grow the community that evolved around it. However, given the volume of writing that I generate and the other priorities in my life, I have neither the time nor the knowledge to code such a site myself, nor do I have the interest in trading my role as "writer and novelist" for one as "web designer." In this case, I think I have a legitimate beef with the primary sites that presume to cater to my community because they fail to provide what I would consider basic necessities, without actually having the means to do better personally.

All that said, yes, I get tired of people who bitch about things that they could correct themselves, who then refuse to do so.

... apparently I did not. I believe I have just proven that I cannot, in fact, do better when it comes to commenting. =>.>=

I've a sneaking suspicion as to what triggered this, and yes, I agree.

I think what is interesting is that many people I know out there DO actually do better. And do it for their day job. And they are rarely the ones bitching vocally about things.

They do sometimes shake their head at the train-wrecks though.

Actions Speak Louder Than Words

Perhaps an interesting corollary: People who do things better can do so because they spend their time improving their skills instead of complaining about everyone else's.

Boy ain't that the truth. So much energy lost to just complaining.

I'm terribly piqued about which site this is in regards to... And honestly I'd love to build a better version of plenty of sites out there, if only I had the time and resources. =P FurBuy alone keeps my paws pretty full. I suppose I'm one of the folks who "DOES IT", however there's only so much you can do while working a full-time job. =/

But yes, I actually get the "I could build a better auctions site than you!" thrown in my face pretty regularly, to which I shrug and encourage them to give it a whack. So far I haven't seen anything that impresses me, or the rest of the auction community apparently. The latest attempt, a place called The Dealer's Den, is using a canned sales system that looks like dick and they nickel and dime sellers as well. I guess the upswing of them coming around is that I'm actually busting my tail adding new features to FurBuy including storefronts... Competition is good. =)
