Feb. 28th, 2006 @ 11:43 pm Metavirus found?
Current Mood: weirdweird
Or maybe, at least a descendant of it.

And best of all, we might all be descendants of it too

Ooooh. My brain's full for the morning.

Random stupid note though. Anyone else think of the Drew Carey show, reading this?

Drew Carrey?? Not sure what there is to do with viruses on that show.

I was mainly thinking of Snow Crash, which involves the mother of all viruses, literally.

Well, I've probably seen twenty minutes of the show, added up ovr my lifetime, but, the character Mimi? And the image of the virus nicknamed Mimi? My brain jumped the gap.

It's pronounced as in mimick, not Mimi the name.

Yes, I know. But my brain is bad for out of the blue, giant-leap associations.

I read it here as well after picking it up in the grocery store (as I keep delaying in sending in the subscription card). Very good read and a very good premise. Unfortuately those die hard religous zealots who see this will only have more fuel to add to their down with evolution, down with science banter. I mean it is bad enough they have to put up with being descended from apes but to be descended from something that is cousin with the common cold or flu is worse to them. There are times I just want to stuff a their darn books down their throats as without them (or organized religion in general) we would be all better off.

You see, Mr Anderson...

I'd like to share a revelation that I've had during my time here. It came to me when I tried to classify your species. I realized that you're not actually mammals. Every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with the surrounding environment, but you humans do not. You move to an area, and you multiply, and multiply, until every natural resource is consumed. The only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet, you are a plague, and we are the cure.

Actually, I should also mention that there are known metaviruses — viruses which infect other viruses. (I don't know if that is what these are: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metaviridae ) But that's not what this "Mimivirus" is.

The "Mimivirus" has some 300 genes, and almost half of the cell parts needed for it to be an independent organism. It's larger and more complex than some bacteria. It also shares alot of its DNA sequences with all other multi-cellular life forms (and some single cell eukaryotes) on Earth. Genetically, it's not related to most bacteria, or other (know) viruses (I think it has a superset of diverse virus genes). It still exhibits all of behaviors in the virus life-cycle; It can't grow or reproduce on its own, eclipse period after infection, etc.

So, anyway, this virus is something really weird.
